SUMMARY:Observer Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:At the height of the pandemic\, many scientists were concerned about how their work had become so divisive and how public trust in science had eroded. At the same time\, many admitted that the very things that first drew them to science—the joy of discovery\, the awe of understanding the world\, the endless curiosity—had been overshadowed by the pressures of grants and career demands. We asked ourselves: How could we make a film that speaks to this moment? How could we honor science in a way that reconnects it to the broader human experience? Register Here \n IAN CHENEY BIO \nIan Cheney is a documentary filmmaker. He received bachelor’s & master’s degrees from Yale and a MFA in filmmaking from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. His twelve feature-length films prior to Observer (2025) include King Corn (2007)\, The City Dark (2010)\, The Search for General Tso (2014)\, The Most Unknown (2018)\, Picture a Scientist (2020)\, The Arc of Oblivion (2023) and  Shelf Life (2024). He has helmed Wicked Delicate Films since 2003. A former MacDowell Fellow & Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT\, he has taught at Yale College & the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy. You can read his blatherings on Subtack but don’t bother. SUMMARY:Rhythms of The Land Screening
DESCRIPTION:Norfolk Botanical Garden is honored to host the private screening of Rhythms of the Land. Guests must register in advance to attend the complimentary film screening. There will be light refreshments and a chance to hear from the director following the film.  Register Here\n A Love Story of Land and Family \nIn 1920\, there were over 920\,000 Black families farming in the United States\, although the majority were sharecroppers and tenant farmers. Today there are just over 48\,697\, a 95% decrease in 100 years. Black farming families have lost their land and their stories are quickly disappearing and should be preserved so that we may understand the history and nature of lives on the farms. The goal of this documentary is to preserve their stories and honor their lives and agrarian legacies. \n DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT \nI am Gail Myers\, a cultural anthropologist and creator of the film project\, Rhythms of the Land. In 1997\, while pursuing my doctorate at The Ohio State University\, I conducted my first interviews with African American farmers. For the last 23 years I have been interviewing\, researching\, writing about\, and filming the stories of African American farmers. \nRhythms of the Land documentary fills the void of these missing agrarian narratives and honors these sharecroppers\, farmers\, and gardeners. \n We want to thank Bank of America for being our sponsor and the Chesapeake – Virginia Beach Alumnae Chapter of DELTA Sigma Theta Sorority\, Inc. for being a community partner.

SUMMARY:SOLD OUT Leaping to Solutions Climate Change Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Register Online Cost: $50 for members; $60 for not-yet-members \n Registration includes lunch This event is sold out! \nClimate change is a topic of daily conversation these days. Scientists have well-documented evidence that human activity\, starting with the dawn of the industrial revolution\, is the driving force behind these changes. Hear from local officials on how cities in the Coastal Virginia & Tidewater area are preparing to mitigate the challenges associated with sea level rise.During our November 2018 symposium\, we touched on the topic of climate change and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Attendees genuinely appreciated the chance to hear the facts and gain a better understanding -based on that feedback\, we’re focusing this symposium solely on climate change.\n Saturday\, February 29\, 2020 \n Check in at 9 in the Auditorium \n Full schedule and keynote speakers are listed below. \nAs an added bonus that day\, Elizabeth River Project will host their 2nd Annual Youth Resilience Expo.
