Join the coolest club in the Garden! Nature journaling helps children learn to better observe nature, and allows them to record their interactions in creative ways. We will meet on June 4 in the WOW Children’s Garden for onsite instruction.

Registrants for our Summer program also receive seven lessons in Google classroom that will include instructional videos and lesson plans. Lesson locations will be at NBG, but can be completed at home or anywhere nature is found. Caregivers are also invited to learn to journal with younger club members. Registration includes a messenger tote, paper journal, and 6 double-sided colored pencils. This program is recommended for children ages 7-13.

Become a Backyard Bird Bud!

Who can be a member? Nature-loving kids ages 4-12.  

What does registration include? Each club member receives a starter kit with a bird friendly plant and a birdwatching activity. Registration and starter kits are free for each club member; however, they do not include admission to the Garden for non-members to pick up kits or participate in onsite activities.  

What do club members do? Backyard Bird Buds will use their flowers to invite birds to their yards, porches, or other outdoor spaces and record what they see throughout the summer. Each month they will receive an e-newsletter to learn about new digital NBG Nature Quests, WOW Children’s Garden Bird Blitz opportunities, and additional content that will help them connect with the birds that call Hampton Roads home.

How do I register and pick up my plant ?   Visit the WOW Children’s Garden (NBG Admission required) June 4, 2022 to pick up a rudbeckia plant and information on family-guided activities you can do to be a Bird Bud.

Participation in activities at the Garden is not required to be a Backyard Bird Bud and the newsletter will include many offsite suggestions.

All guests and volunteers ages 10+ are required to wear a protective mask that covers the mouth and nose when entering any NBG building or structure including outdoor restrooms and the butterfly house (when opened).

Our youngest visitors,  “Sprouts” over the age of two, are strongly encouraged to wear a mask in compliance with current CDC health and safety recommendations.

Guests are asked to bring their own personal facemask. NBG has a very limited supply of disposal masks available upon request at the Guest Services desk in Baker Hall.

Face coverings shall also be required when patrons are  outdoors  if a distance of six feet from other persons, not associated with one household, cannot be maintained.

Boo! Celebrate Halloween by designing your own spooky garden. Each garden comes with an air plant, and a few other Trick ‘r Trees themed activities and prizes. Recommended for ages 4+ with some caregiver participation.
